University of Pennsylvania Sailing Team
Recruitment
The University of Pennsylvania Sailing Team is a competitive collegiate sailing program working hard to ascend the rankings. While we are a club team, we have a full-time coach, part-time weekend coach, varsity-level training schedule, and workout regimen–including access to Penn Athletics personal trainers and strength & conditioning coaches. We expect our athletes to maintain the same level of commitment as any varsity team; we feel this is the best way for us to excel at the national level. While we operate as a high-level team and varsity-level schedule and commitment, we still maintain an intimate team culture, and many opportunities for student leadership. We have a dedicated full-time coach, Isaac Clark, who started in the spring of 2018 to help lead our team to success.

In order to provide you the most pertinent information, please read the section below that best represents you.
High School Juniors For high school juniors interested in the recruitment process, please contact Coach Isaac Clark (ihclark@upenn.edu). Please include: your name, skipper/crew, hometown, high school, and your potential majors/areas of studies of interest. Below is an outlined rough timeline of the stages of the recruitment process. High School Junior Year (Fall or Spring, Before End of April): Begin recruitment process by reaching out to Coach Clark, who will put you in touch with one of our student recruitment chairs. Together with the recruitment chair, you’ll set up a visit day(s) to campus. High School Junior Year (Visit Date of Your Choosing): On your visit day (optional overnight), you will spend time with various team members doing a variety of activities. You’ll arrive on campus, receive a tour from a team member 1-on-1, who’ll answer whatever questions you have, go to classes of interest to you, have lunch with Coach Clark, before heading to practice and seeing first hand what an average day looks like on the water. If doing an overnight, you will either arrive the evening before your planned visit date, have dinner with your host/team, and then spend the night in the college dorm, and do your visit the next day. Alternatively, you can stay the night after your date, then leave the next morning. If you have an official Penn event (information session, campus tour etc) booked during your potential visit date, please let our recruitment chair know, and we will plan around that. Of note is that our season runs from late August through the end of October in the fall, and then late February through May in the spring. We encourage you to come during our in season dates, as you will get the full ‘day in the life’ of a Penn Sailor, including practice. That said, if these dates do not work for you, we absolutely are able to still have you on campus, during which you will do all of the aforementioned activities, except practice.
High School Seniors This section is for high school seniors (who are either: planning to apply, already have applied, or accepted students). While it is not possible to participate in the recruitment process as a senior, we still would love to have you on campus to meet the team and see what Penn Sailing is like! Our team takes walk-on sailors, and there is no experience requirement, so we'd love to get you involved. Please contact Coach Isaac Clark (ihclark@upenn.edu) with your sailing experience (if any), high school, any majors of interest, and your current application status (applying/applied/accepted). Please follow the instructions below to set up a campus visit with the team, and see Penn Sailing first hand! High School Senior Year (Anytime, Ideally Before Mid-April): Reach out to Coach Clark, who will put you in touch with our student recruitment chairs. Specifically for seniors who have already been accepted: The University hosts ‘Quaker Days’ programming during a Thursday-Saturday period of April, after RD results have come out. It is definitely possible to participate in both ‘Quaker Days’ and a Sailing campus visit. This can be convenient if you are already coming to campus and want to see general university life and the sailing team.
Current Penn Students For current University of Pennsylvania students, we do take walk-on sailors and would love for you to get involved! We do not require any prior sailing experience for walk-on sailors. For rising/current first years: The University hosts a ‘Sports Club Exposition’ each year during New Student Orientation (NSO), which occurs during the first full week after first year moving in. During this event (typically during the evening), you will have a chance to speak with current captains and sailors to learn about the inner workings of the team. We can then place you on our communications list, so if you choose to join the team, you have all the necessary information. We would love to see you there and get to meet you! For non first years: We take walk on sailors primarily during the beginning of the fall season. If you are interested in joining, we would also encourage you to come to the ‘Sports Club Exposition’ (if you are on campus during that period). If not, please contact Coach Isaac Clark (ihclark@upenn.edu), or Captains Jackson McAililey (jtmca@wharton.upenn.edu) or Janet Fu (ljfu@wharton.upenn.edu) with your sailing experience (if any) and current school (College/Wharton/Engineering/Nursing), and together you will facilitate joining the team!
